Famous words from one of the most influential civil rights leaders in the state and country, César Chávez.
The last day of March is California’s observed holiday honoring the remarkable contributions and inspiring legacy of César Chávez. The renowned civil rights activist and labor leader co-founded the United Farm Workers (UFW) and tirelessly worked towards improving the living and working conditions of farm workers in the United States.
President Barack Obama officially declared March 31st, César Chávez Day, as a commemorative holiday in 2014, recognizing the immense impact Chávez had, and still has, on the lives of farmworkers and the broader civil rights movement.
To celebrate and honor César Chávez on this important day, there are many things you can do in the San Francisco area. The holiday may be on March 31st, but the celebration goes until April 29th, when the César Chávez – Dolores Huerta Parade takes place in the Mission District.
We at the Mission Economic Development Agency, MEDA, have comprised a list of ways you can celebrate César Chávez Day and learn more about his legacy in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area.
Check out books and movies at the San Francisco Public Library
The San Francisco Public Library offers resources to learn about the life and work of César Chávez. There are books in English and Spanish for adults and children about the agricultural leader. The library also has documentaries about the farm worker marches and protests.

Documentaries and Breakfast at MNC Inspiring Success
The organization ‘Mission Neighborhood Centers, Inspiring Success’ will show the documentaries “Si Se Puede” and “Fighting for Our Lives” on Thursday, March 30th, starting at 8:30 a.m. Tickets are $20 and include breakfast and a discussion.
Visit César Chávez Park in Berkeley
Cross the Bay Bridge and walk through César Chávez Park in Berkeley. The site is near the water and has a great view of San Francisco. When walking through the park you can read educational material about the life of César Chávez and the farm worker movement.
César Chávez and Dolores Huerta Parade
Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 29th, and participate in the César Chávez and Dolores Huerta Parade. The event highlights the most well-known figures of the farm workers’ civil rights movement. The parade starts at Dolores Park at the intersection of 19th Street and ends on 24th Street between Bryant and Folsom streets, where a festival will be held. The parade begins at 11 a.m. and festival activities end at 5 p.m.
Help Pajaro Valley
Winter in California has affected thousands of people within a large number of agricultural communities in Northern California – one being the Pajaro Valley. Thousands of people have been evacuated because of detrimental flooding after multiple atmospheric rivers passed through.
We encourage and invite everyone to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank and the American Red Cross – two agencies that have put boots on the ground to directly help those impacted.

Día de César Chávez: 5 maneras de honrar al líder de los derechos civiles en San Francisco

Las palabras célebres de uno de los líderes de derechos civiles más influyentes en el país, César Chávez.
El último día de marzo se celebra el feriado que honra las notables contribuciones y el legado inspirador de César Chávez. El renombrado activista de derechos civiles y líder laboral cofundó United Farm Workers (UFW) y trabajó incansablemente para mejorar las condiciones de vida y de trabajo de los trabajadores agrícolas en los Estados Unidos.
El presidente Barack Obama proclamó este día como festivo conmemorativo en 2014. De este modo reconoció el inmenso impacto que César Chávez tuvo en la vida de los trabajadores agrícolas y en el movimiento más amplio de derechos civiles.
Para celebrar y honrar a César Chávez en este día importante, hay muchas cosas que se pueden hacer en el área de San Francisco. El feriado es este viernes 31 de marzo, pero la celebración continúa hasta el 29 de abril, cuando se lleva a cabo el Desfile César Chávez – Dolores Huerta en el Distrito de la Misión.

Libros y películas en la Biblioteca Pública de San Francisco
La Biblioteca Pública de San Franciscos ofrece los mayores recursos para conocer sobre la vida y obra de César Chávez. Hay textos en inglés y en español —para adultos y niños— sobre el líder agrícola. La biblioteca también cuenta con documentales sobre lo que fueron las marchas y protestas de los trabajadores agrícolas.
Una recomendación de MEDA para ver en familia es la película César Chávez, protagonizada por Michael Peña y dirigida por Diego Luna.
Documentales y desayuno en MNC Inspiring Success
La organización MNC Inspiring Success proyectará los documentales “Si Se Puede” y “Fighting for Our Lives” el jueves 30 de marzo desde las 8:30 a.m. Los boletos tienen un valor de $20. Habrá desayuno y conversatorio.

Una alternativa para honrar a César Chávez es cruzar el puente bahía y caminar el parque César Chávez en Berkeley. El sitio es cerca del agua y cuenta con una gran vista de San Francisco. Al caminar el parque se puede leer material educativo sobre la vida de César Chávez y el movimiento de trabajadores agrícolas.
Desfile de César Chávez y Dolores Huerta
Prográmese para el sábado 29 de abril y participe del Desfile de César Chávez y Dolores Huerta, las figuras más conocidas del movimiento de derechos civiles de los trabajadores agrícolas. El desfile empieza en Dolores Park a la altura de la calle 19 y concluye en la calle 24 entre Bryant y Folsom, donde se celebrará un festival. El desfile empieza a las 11 a.m. y las actividades del festival concluyen a las 5 p.m.
Ayude a la comunidad agrícola en Pájaro Valley
El invierno en California ha afectado a un gran número de comunidades agrícolas en el norte de California. Una de ellas es la de Pájaro Valley, en donde miles de personas fueron evacuadas luego del paso del río atmósferico.
Animamos e invitamos a todos a donar a Second Harvest Food Bank y la Cruz Roja Americana: dos agencias que han puesto botas sobre el terreno para ayudar directamente a los afectados.
