Seis meses en MEDA abrieron las posibilidades profesionales de una becaria latina de DreamSF Fellowship de la Oficina de Participación Cívica y Asuntos de Inmigrantes de San Francisco (OCEIA). El programa es orientado a estudiantes inmigrantes y futuros profesionales que buscan experiencia laboral en San Francisco

Cinthya Padilla llegó a MEDA en el segundo semestre de 2022 desde San Francisco State University en donde estudió psicología. Su objetivo en MEDA era tener contacto directo con miembros de la comunidad y conocer a fondo el funcionamiento de las organizaciones sin fines de lucro.

“Antes sólo conocía a estas organizaciones como cliente, pero al estar del otro lado se comprenden mejor las necesidades de la comunidad inmigrante, uno se vuelve un experto en el tema de los recursos sociales”, dice Cinthya, quien es oriunda de Nicaragua. 

En su tiempo con MEDA, Cinthya tuvo un rol de liderazgo con el programa Mision Digital del equipo de capacitación laboral. Allí tuvo la oportunidad de enseñar computación básica a miembros de la comunidad durante dos ciclos del programa. 

“Mision Digital fue una nueva experiencia para mí ya que nunca me vi como educadora”, dice Cinthya. “Ahora sé que en el futuro puedo trabajar en educación porque me gustó y me sentí orgullosa de ver la comunidad aprendiendo”.

Como graduada en psicología, Cinthya asegura que fue gratificante ver a los miembros de la comunidad sentir más confianza en sus capacidades gracias a los programas que ofrece MEDA.

“En MEDA tenemos un gran interés en cultivar talento joven y brindar experiencia a los futuros líderes de nuestra comunidad”, dice José Mariscal, gerente de los programas de desarrollo de fuerza laboral de MEDA. “Cinthya demostró grandes habilidades durante su tiempo como DreamSF en nuestra organización y la comunidad se benefició de su habilidades como educadora”.

DreamSF Fellow Leaves Mark in the Mission Community

Six months at MEDA opened up new career possibilities to a Latina participating in the DreamSF Fellowship program of the San Francisco Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs (OCEIA.) The DreamSF Fellowship is a paid leadership and professional development program for immigrant students and aspiring professionals who seek to gain real-world experience in the Bay Area.

Cinthya Padilla, a psychology student at San Francisco State University, joined MEDA during the Fall 2022 semester. Her goal was to have direct contact with members of the community and gain an in-depth understanding of how non-profit organizations operate.

“Before, I only knew these organizations as a client, but being on the other side you better understand the needs of the immigrant community,” says Cinthya, who is originally from Nicaragua. “You become an expert on the subject of community resources.”

During her time with MEDA, Cinthya held a leadership role within the Mission Digital program that is part of MEDA’s workforce development programs. Cinthya had the opportunity to teach basic computing skills to community members during two cycles of the program.

“Mision Digital was a new experience for me since I had never seen myself as an educator,” says Cinthya. “Now I know that in the future I can work in education. I liked it and I felt proud to see the community learning.”

As a psychology major, Cinthya states that it was gratifying to see members of the community feel more confident in their abilities thanks to the training programs MEDA offers.

“Cinthya demonstrated great skills during her time as a DreamSF fellow at our organization, and the community benefited from her skills as an educator,” says José Mariscal, MEDA’s Workforce Development Programs Manager. “At MEDA we have a great interest in cultivating young talent and providing experience to the future leaders of our community.”
