Program fosters leadership for Latinos

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 6, 2021 — Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) has announced that Business Development Program Manager Edwin Rodriguez has been chosen as a National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB) 2021-22 fellowship. (Fact sheet.) Rodriguez has been at MEDA for 10 years.

“I am grateful to NALCAB for this opportunity to delve into best practices around community development,” said Rodriguez. “This year’s cohort features emerging Latino leaders from across the nation, and I am excited to have the opportunity to learn and grow along with everyone.”

Established in 2010, the NALCAB Pete Garcia Community Economic Development Fellowship is a yearlong leadership training that brings together next-generation Latino leaders from across the country to build the practical, personal and professional skills needed to fill the increasing leadership gap in the community economic development field. The program’s culturally relevant curriculum is designed to help practitioners become more effective leaders through professional development, technical training and peer networks. Fellows come from diverse personal and professional backgrounds and from multiple countries of origin.

Past Fellows’ areas of expertise have included: equitable neighborhood development; community revitalization; policy & advocacy; community organizing; lending; financial counseling and education; and small business development.

The NALCAB Pete Garcia Fellowship has graduated 153 Latino Leaders from across the country, representing 90 unique nonprofit organizations in 24 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In addition to joining a diverse national network of Latino leaders, NALCAB Pete Garcia Fellowship graduates have meaningfully contributed to their organizations and their field, including taking on executive leadership positions.
