MEDA Records 75 Press Mentions in 2022, Furthering National -- and Even International -- Visibility

From the San Francisco Business Times and EdSource to the Portland Tribune and France’s Les Echoes, local, statewide, national and even international press are taking notice about the impact of MEDA’s work. There were 75+ earned media mentions in 2022, with our nonprofit’s staff quoted or mentioned by name 40 times. When it comes to news in San Francisco’s Mission District or around successful community-development models, reporters often look to MEDA as their go-to source. This has been especially true as the topic of systems change is on everyone’s minds as we begin to emerge from the pandemic.

“When the pandemic’s shelter-in-place order started in March 2020, reporters immediately started calling to learn what was happening in the Latino and immigrant community, but now equitable recovery is the topic of the day,”explains MEDA’s Associate Director of Marketing & Communications Christopher Gil. “By getting these stories in the press, we keep the conversation going.”

When it comes to Spanish-language media, MEDA’s Community Communications Manager Juan Mesa serves as the point-of-contact. Quickly becoming a familiar face in the Mission and showcasing a strong background as a reporter, this work comes naturally to Mesa.

“I know that getting stories in the news is an ideal outreach strategy to let community members know about all of the free services at MEDA,” says Mesa. “In 2023, I’m excited to bridge relationships with local and national Spanish-language reporters looking for stories pertinent to our Latino and immigrant community in San Francisco, and beyond.”
