MEDA March 2015 Volunteer of the Month: Tim Martin

Tim Martin-BlogEach month, the Mission Economic Development Agency honors one of its dedicated volunteers—the people who are an integral part of MEDA’s ability to provide free services to low- and moderate-income Bay Area residents. Thanks to all of the selfless MEDA volunteers who choose Plaza Adelante as their second home.

Name: Tim Martin
Program: Free Tax Preparation Program

Why did you decide to volunteer with MEDA?
I wanted to give back to the community. MEDA seemed like a great organization and the Free Tax Preparation program seemed like somewhere my time would be helpful.

What projects have you worked on as a volunteer?
I’ve volunteered at the VITA tax program. I’ve mostly done client taxes, but have done a bit of quality review, plus mentoring of new volunteers.

What do you like best about volunteering at MEDA?
I enjoy the great variety of people–clients, staff and volunteers–that I meet and hearing their stories. Even though taxes are often a stressful time, everyone still has a smile on their face.

What have you learned from your volunteer experience?
A ton of tax law. I’ve also learned a number of new Spanish words related to finances and taxes.

Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life?
I’ve swum from Alcatraz back to San Francisco.
