Each month, the Mission Economic Development Agency honors one of its dedicated volunteers—the people who are an integral part of MEDA’s ability to provide free services to low- and moderate-income Bay Area residents. Thanks to all of the selfless MEDA volunteers who choose Plaza Adelante as their second home.
Name: Tom Grey
Program/Department: Business Development
Why did you decide to volunteer with MEDA? I decided to volunteer at MEDA because I feel that the best way to help build a vibrant community in the future is to start building vibrant businesses today. The Mission is such a culturally rich neighborhood in San Francisco and I want to help make sure that we build the foundation to keep that culture strong for years to come.
What projects have you worked on as a volunteer? Since I started volunteering, I have been helping Diana Renta with her business, Devilish Bites. We have worked together to build tools to better track the financial information of the business, as well as working to introduce new items to the menu.
What do you like best about volunteering at MEDA? I have loved having the opportunity to help work with a local entrepreneur, while having the support of Business Coach Alexander Ankrom to help out in areas where I am not familiar. The ability to help out while receiving great support from the organization has made volunteering at MEDA a blast.
What have you learned from your volunteer experience? The volunteering experience has opened my eyes to how difficult it is to start a business from scratch–and, more importantly, the experience has made me aware of the amazing amount of hard work that people put in every day to make their business grow. I’m constantly impressed by the dedication of Diana and Alexander to see that their work is a success.
Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life? I happen to have perfectly flat feet.
