MEDA Records Over 100 Press Mentions in 2021, Furthering National Visibility

From the California Political Review and Univision to the Miami Herald and Next City, local, statewide and national press are taking notice about the impact of MEDA’s work. There were 100+ earned media mentions in 2021, with our nonprofit’s staff quoted 50+ times. When it comes to news in San Francisco’s Mission District or around successful community-development models, reporters often look to MEDA as their go-to source. This has been especially true during the pandemic.

“When the pandemic’s shelter-in-place order started in March 2020, reporters immediately started calling to learn what was happening in the Latino and immigrant community,” explains MEDA’s Associate Director of Marketing & Communications Christopher Gil. “By getting these stories in the press over the past 21 months, the Bay Area at large was able to learn how disproportionately affected our community was during the crisis – on a health and economic level.”

Even with the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, the MEDA team has continued to make strides in devising and implementing innovative strategies around its core work of affordable housing, education, financial education, jobs, health and policy. These models are being shared across the land, with Chief Strategy Officer Richard Raya now leading this work (press release) – and journalists have been writing about our best practices.

When it comes to Spanish-language media, MEDA’s Community Communications Officer Juan Mesa is now the point-of-contact. Quickly becoming a familiar face in the Mission and showcasing a strong background as a reporter, this work comes naturally to Mesa.

“I know that getting stories in the news is an ideal outreach strategy to let community members know about all of the free services at MEDA,” says Mesa. “In 2022, I’m excited to bridge relationships with local and national Spanish-language reporters looking for stories pertinent to our Latino and immigrant community in San Francisco, and beyond.”
