Each month, the Mission Economic Development Agency honors one of its dedicated volunteers — the people who are an integral part of MEDA’s ability to provide free services to low- and moderate-income Bay Area residents. Thanks to all of the selfless MEDA volunteers who choose Plaza Adelante as their second home.
Name: Maria Silvia Velazquez
Program: Financial Capability
Why did you decide to volunteer with MEDA?
I came to ask for advice and Financial Capability Program Manager Jackie Marcelos was, and still is, very helpful. Jackie has been helping me with some personal issues, and when she asked me if I wanted to help I thought it was a good idea to give back.
What projects have you worked on as a volunteer?
I’m currently working with the Financial Capability program. I call all clients who take our Welcome Orientation and guide them and set them up with an appointment, depending which program they’re interested in participating in at MEDA. I scan their documents and create a file for them in our Salesforce database, plus I print their credit report so we can conduct a follow up.
What do you like best about volunteering at MEDA?
I find myself in a place with very humble people. Giving my time to help others is very gratifying.
What have you learned from your volunteer experience?
I have learned how to be more organized, how to use the printer to scan documents and how to use a database.
Tell us something we may not know about you. Any interesting facts you’d like to share about your life?
I love dogs and I know how to design acrylic nails.
