Una tarde soleada fue el escenario para celebrar el presente y futuro de la formación narrativa -visual y escrita- de jóvenes en el Distrito de la Mission.

El sábado 16 de julio, First Exposures y Youth Speaks abrieron oficialmente las puertas de su sede compartida en Casa Adelante – 2060 Folsom, un edificio 100% de vivienda económica, construido por MEDA y Chinatown Community Development Center.  La presencia de estas organizaciones sin fines de lucro y al servicio de la juventud en los espacios comunitarios del edificio son ejemplo de los esfuerzos de preservación cultural que MEDA ha vinculado a su lucha contra el desplazamiento de residentes en la Mission. Los espacios para instituciones culturales garantizan la oferta de servicios vocacionales y formativos a miembros de la comunidad, con lo que se enriquece la expresión colectiva que fortalece el compromiso cívico de miembros de la comunidad. 

Con la alianza de First Exposures y Youth Speaks, que firmaron un contrato de arrendamiento de 30 años, el Distrito de la Mission contará con un espacio dedicado a la narración de historias  por las próximas décadas, por lo que jugarán una papel importante en la preservación de la identidad del vecindario. El compromiso con la juventud de las dos instituciones complementa a Casa Adelante – 2060 Folsom, en donde jóvenes en edad de transición tienen su hogar. 

“En un momento como ahora, cuando hay hipergentrificación, hiperdesplazamiento y desinversión en las artes y la cultura, particularmente en las artes y la cultura en vecindarios como Mission, que están llenos de comunidades de inmigrantes refugiados, es muy importante que pudimos asegurar un hogar permanente”, dijo la directora ejecutiva de Youth Speaks, Michelle Lee “Mush”, en una conversación con MEDA durante la inauguración del sitio.

Youth Speaks es una organización que por 26 años ha ofrecido una “lista completa de programas de educación en artes literarias y brinda numerosas oportunidades para que los jóvenes sean publicados y escuchados”. Sus programas brindan a la juventud herramientas “para tomar el control de sus vidas a través del lenguaje”.

La tradición narrativa que Youth Speaks representa ahora vive en sinergia con First Exposures, una organización que provee a jóvenes impactados por la inequidad social y económica la oportunidad de aprender fotografía en un ambiente comunitario, con el objetivo de empoderarlos a expresarse creativamente y a liderar a sus comunidades. La organización tendrá una casa permanente en la Mission después de años de mudanzas en San Francisco.

“Se trata de tener estabilidad, el hecho de que realmente podemos hacer planes porque ahora sabemos dónde estaremos durante años”, dijo el director ejecutivo de First Exposures, Erik Auerbach. “Tener algo a largo plazo y estar en un edificio para comunidad nos brinda muchas oportunidades. El hecho de que exista la comunidad que vive aquí en el edificio, que son las personas con las que queremos trabajar”.

La sede cuenta con espacio para galería y presentaciones, oficina para el equipo de trabajo, dos aulas de clase equipadas con la tecnología necesaria para los estudiantes, y un cuarto oscuro para el revelado de películas fotográficas, que según Eric Portillo, Asociado de Desarrollo de First Exposures, es probablemente el más nuevo en mucho tiempo en San Francisco.

De esta manera, la Mission tiene una nueva casa para que sus historias se sigan contando.

Mission Storytelling Roots Run Deep with First Exposures and Youth Speaks New Long-Term Homes at Casa Adelante – 2060 Folsom 

A sunny afternoon set the stage to celebrate the present and future storytelling education of young people in the Mission. Such storytelling runs the gamut from visual to written to spoken.

On July 16, First Exposures and Youth Speaks officially opened the doors to their shared new home at Casa Adelante – 2060 Folsom, which offers 100% affordable housing from co-developers MEDA and Chinatown Community Development Center. The presence of these youth-serving organizations in the building’s community spaces is an example of the cultural placekeeping MEDA has implemented to fight displacement in the Mission. Spaces for arts & cultural institutions guarantee vocational mentorship, which enriches collective creative expression and strengthens the civic participation of community members.

With the partnership of First Exposures and Youth Speaks, which signed a 30-year lease, the Mission will have a space dedicated to storytelling for decades to come, playing an important role in preserving the identity of the neighborhood. The commitment to youth by the pair of institutions blends seamlessly into Casa Adelante – 2060 Folsom, which many transitional-age youth (TAY) now call home.

“In a moment like right now, when there is hyper-gentrification, hyper-displacement and hyper-disinvestment in the arts and culture, particularly arts and culture in neighborhoods like the Mission that are full of immigrant refugee communities, it is so important that we made sure that we have a permanent home,” said Youth Speaks Executive Director Michelle “Mush” Lee in conversation with MEDA during the grand opening. 

Youth Speaks is a 26-year-old San Francisco organization that offers a “comprehensive slate of literary arts education programs and provides numerous opportunities for youth to be published and heard.” Its programs provide youth with tools “to take control of their lives through language and oral poetry to help define the new American Voice.”

The narrative tradition that Youth Speaks represents will now live in synergy with First Exposures, an organization that provides young people impacted by social and economic inequity the opportunity to learn photography in a communal setting, with the aim of empowering them to express themselves creatively and to lead their communities. First Exposures will have a permanent home in the Mission after years of moving around San Francisco.

“It really is just the stability, the fact that we actually can make plans, that we know where we are going to be for years,” said First Exposures Executive Director Erik Auerbach. “To have something that is also long term, to be in a building that is community based offers us much opportunity. The fact that there is the community that lives here in the building – they are the folks with whom we want to work.”

The site has space for gallery and poetry performance, offices for both staffs, two classrooms equipped with the necessary technology for the students and a darkroom for the development of photographic film. According to First Exposures Development Associate Eric Portillo, this darkroom is probably the newest in a long time in San Francisco.

The Mission District has a new home for its stories to continue to be told.
