MEDA’s 2013 Tax Report:
$5.2 Million in Tax Returns to San Francisco Residents
Thanks to MEDA’s hard working staff and volunteers, April 2013 saw the successful completion of MEDA’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for a fourth consecutive year. In partnership with the San Francisco Human Services Agency, Bank of the West and United Way of the Bay Area, MEDA offered families in San Francisco free tax return services, benefits screening, and tax credit. Plaza Adelante served as the program’s headquarters with three additional tax sites at SF Human Services Agency offices throughout San Francisco’s low-income neighborhoods.
Tax preparation is an opportunity for families to make important financial choices because- if they are receiving thousands of dollars in refunds- they can use these refunds to pay off debt or increase savings. MEDA helps tax season clients navigate these choices through our Financial Capability program. Our Finance Counselors help clients work toward financial goals and milestones and offer monthly specialized seminars to self-employed tax clients throughout the season to help them prepare for and file the Schedule-C.
As MEDA’s largest direct service program, our VITA Program is a key entry point into other asset building programs and services at Plaza Adelante, maximizing opportunities to build wealth.
The Success is in the Numbers.
Through the tireless efforts of dedicated staff and volunteers, MEDA completed 3,812 tax returns with total refunds of $ 5,258,962 at our four VITA sites. This was an increase over tax season 2012 of 500 tax returns filed, with a 15% monetary increase in returns to families.
We would like to thank United Way’s Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Initiative, Bank of the West and the San Francisco Human Services Agency for their financial support of the 2013 VITA Site Program – with their help we held a successful 2013 tax season! The VITA Site Program attributes its success to our talented staff and volunteers from banks, partner organizations, and the community.
