14. Desde mi ventana / From my window
This is the window of my apartment from which I used to see and talk daily to my mostly Latino neighbors about what was happening. Now, there are only five Latino families in the building, where before we were twenty-seven. Each time an apartment is vacated, the owner will remodel it and double or triple the rent. Newcomers do not relate to the rest of us, and some of them are bothered by the noise that our children make. I miss the neighbors who left because we treated each other like family and shared our sorrows and joys. As we have been in the apartment for a long time, the owner doesn’t make repairs and I worry that the paint, which is peeling off of the walls and windows, has lead and will affect my children’s health.
