19. Mi refugio / My refuge
I consider the Women’s Building to be my second home. I currently live with my two children in a shelter that we leave early in the morning, only returning to it in order to sleep. Conditions in some shelters are difficult because they are dirty, and not very comfortable, and the relationship with other residents can be humiliating. Here in this building, they have given me the tools and resources to find a decent and well-paying job. In addition, they have provided assistance with therapy, counseling, and my immigration process. Through one of their trainings, I was able to become a leader, and realized that I could be the voice for many women who have a situation similar to mine and do not dare to speak out. Before the leadership workshop I was shy, I was afraid to talk, but now I feel safe and I have improved my self-esteem.
