It was at an MPN elementary school where Luz was connected to the many resources available to strengthen her family. Such was the case for 531 MPN families who received referrals within the collaborative in 2018. Having culturally relevant services for newcomer parents and their children is a vital piece of the ecosystem to build Latino wealth and power nationwide. Luz also gives back, staying involved at her kids’ MPN schools. The zealous Mission resident has done everything from making student lunches and attending PTA meetings to assisting teachers with clerical work and being part of an English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC). Her aim is that all children and youth succeed in school. Luz wants her children to obtain a solid education — an opportunity she was never afforded. Her goal for Jitzy, Pedro and Angel is that they successfully graduate from college and then embark on a prosperous career. MEDA is the backbone agency of the Mission Promise Neighborhood (MPN), an education initiative that since 2013 has strengthened families as they journey along a cradle-to-college-to-career continuum. MPN family success coaches act as connectors at schools and early care and education centers — helping Mission District families access the services they need. Additionally, partners harness the power of a database referral tool to track client progress. With 2018’s two-year extension grant, MPN has expanded from four to nine Mission schools, which serve as community anchors. “ I want my children to have the opportunities I did not.” H E A D I N G T O WA R D G E N E R AT I O N A L S U C C E S S 13
