Irma Soberanis in front of Casa Adelante – 1296 Shotwell
Irma Soberanis has called San Francisco home for over 30 years. Like many long-time residents of the Mission District, she worked hard to make a living—taking on jobs in caretaking, cleaning homes, and providing child care.
Five years ago, after losing her job as a caretaker, Irma faced one of the most difficult times in her life. Without a steady income, she was no longer able to afford rent in a city where housing costs continue to increase. She began couch-surfing, staying temporarily with friends. At the same time, Irma’s health began to face different challenges. The instability of not having her own home made it even harder to manage her medical needs. She recalled being very uncertain of her well being during this time.
Thankfully, Irma secured a permanent home at Casa Adelante – 1296 Shotwell, an affordable housing development that MEDA built in partnership with Chinatown Community Development Center.
Today, Irma feels safe, happy and stable as she has a place to call hers. She is thankful for the community organizations that stood by her side, and especially to MEDA for advocating for housing that prioritizes longtime residents like her.
“My whole life has taken a big turn for the better,” she states. She is very grateful and proud of the home she has been able to create in Casa Adelante – 1296 Shotwell.
Affordable housing is a necessity that transforms lives and safeguards vulnerable communities, as Irma’s experience powerfully demonstrates. MEDA is dedicated to creating deeply affordable housing that respects and supports Mission District families. This commitment is evident in projects like Casa Adelante – 1515 South Van Ness, which will add 168 affordable family units adjacent to Casa Adelante – 1296 Shotwell. By expanding initiatives like these, MEDA is reinforcing its pledge to provide working-class residents, such as Irma, with secure homes for generations.
