Preserving the Heart of the Mission:
Milestone Renovations Underway
Renovations are officially underway at 2059–2061 Mission Street, and this milestone marks an important investment in our community. This project is more than just renovations, it represents a commitment to the people who call the Mission home. By bringing these homes up to modern health and safety standards, we are supporting residents’ well-being, strengthening the building for the future, and ensuring that families can continue to live, grow, and thrive right here in the Mission for generations to come.
The property was acquired by MEDA on September 6, 2024, with support from the San Francisco Housing Accelerator Fund. Built nearly a century ago around 1918, 2061 Mission Street carries deep historic character that reflects the heart of the Mission District. From its beautiful architectural details to its skylight and winding staircase, the building tells a story of resilience and continuity. It still holds so much life and offers to the families who have long called this place home.
The building at 2059 Mission Street is undergoing a complete transformation, moving beyond mere surface improvements to ensure a safer, more sustainable structure for the community. Crucial upgrades include an upgrade of the plumbing system, which will improve safety by providing reliable access to clean water and resolving issues with clogged pipes. In addition to essential structural retrofitting designed to make the building more resilient to earthquakes, the renovation also features the installation of new roofing and windows to enhance energy efficiency and weather protection.
“These comprehensive enhancements are designed to meet modern safety standards and secure the building’s longevity for years to come,” says Daniel Cruz, Project Manager of Preservation in the Community Real Estate program.
For generations, the Mission District has been home to community members who have built their lives, raised families, and created cherished memories, forming deep and lasting connections. Moving is simply not an option for many. While affordable housing is crucial to enabling them to stay in the neighborhood they love, it must also provide security and promote good health.
As one current resident shared,
“It’s exciting—even though it’s not my house and I don’t own it. I’ve experienced joy there, sadness, everything. And it’s beautiful that they are going to be renovating it.”
This renovation marks the first phase of a larger process to preserve affordable housing and strengthen community infrastructure. At its core, this work is about honoring the past while investing in the future. Ensuring the Mission remains a place where longtime residents can continue to belong. Stay tuned for more as we continue to take you on this journey of restoring and preserving Mission homes.
