A Promise Renewed: California Invests in Mission Families

At a community resource fair hosted by MNC Inspiring Success in the heart of the Mission District, State Senator Scott Wiener and Assemblymember Matt Haney stood with the Mission Promise Neighborhood (MPN) community to announce a multimillion-dollar state investment in organizations that walk alongside the neighborhood’s children and families every day.

For a community that has spent more than a decade building a path from cradle to career, it was a day to celebrate how far Mission families have come, and a clear sign that California is betting on what comes next.

The funding comes through SB 113, the Budget Act of 2026, part of the legislation that sets California’s spending for the 2026-27 fiscal year. Senator Wiener and Assemblymember Haney championed the Mission’s share.

Of that total, $1.5 million goes to MNC, a longtime MPN, partner for capital projects that expand family services, early care and education, and community spaces. The other $1 million goes to Mission Promise Neighborhood (MPN), where MEDA serves as backbone agency, to support career and family programs.

“This investment will help to expand access to child care. This grant will help expand access to services for immigrant communities at a time we need those services,” said Senator Wiener.

Assemblymember Haney pointed to the pressure families are under. “At a time when childcare, housing, and everyday costs are putting enormous pressure on families, we need to invest in the programs that people already rely on,” he said.

MEDA is grateful to Senator Wiener and Assemblymember Haney for their advocacy for Latino families and children, for the Mission District, and for making sure this work continues.

“Thirteen years ago, we made a promise to the Mission’s children: that we would come together so they could reach their dreams. We have kept that promise,” said Jillian Spindle, MEDA’s chief advancement and strategy officer.

The results show up across a child’s whole journey, and across the whole family:

  • Kindergarten readiness in our schools has jumped by more than 50 percent.
  • College and career pathways are growing: the number of young people continuing their education after high school is up nearly 25 percent.
  • Parents are building careers as early childhood educators, IT technicians, and small business owners who create jobs and strengthen our city’s economy.
  • Families are staying in the neighborhood they call home, thanks to 2,000 new units of affordable housing, homes our community fought for.

Mission Promise Neighborhood works because many organizations move in the same direction. Our thanks go to every partner who has shown up for families, every single day, for more than a decade:

  • City and County of San Francisco
  • Felton Institute
  • Good Samaritan Family Resource Center
  • Homeless Prenatal Program
  • Instituto Familiar de la Raza
  • Jamestown Community Center
  • MEDA
  • Mission Graduates
  • MNC Inspiring Success
  • San Francisco Unified School District
  • Support for Families of Children with Disabilities
  • Tandem, Partners in Early Learning

Thank you again, Senator Wiener and Assemblymember Haney. Investing in families is the best investment a state can make. Let’s keep making it, together.
