For San Franciscans
Preservation that
puts people first
MEDA acquires and rehabilitates multi-unit buildings to keep long-term San Francisco renters stably housed in the neighborhoods they call home.
Preservation is one of MEDA’s most immediate tools for housing stabilization. In rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods like the Mission, rent-controlled buildings are often bought by speculative investors—leading to displacement of low-income families who have lived there for decades. MEDA flips that script.
Through San Francisco’s Small Sites Program, we acquire targeted buildings where residents are at risk of losing their homes. Once purchased, we make needed repairs, maintain rent protections, and permanently remove the properties from the speculative market. These buildings are then stewarded by MEDA as permanently affordable community assets.
It’s one of the fastest, most cost-effective ways to keep families in San Francisco, stop displacement, and preserve the cultural fabric of the neighborhoods—unit by unit, block by block.
Are you a tenant at risk of displacement or an owner who wants to protect your tenants?
If you’re a tenant at risk or a property owner who wants to support long-term housing stability, contact our team at sspteam@medasf.org to learn how we can work together.
