Mission District Update: Key Insights from the 2025 MPN Neighborhood Survey
SAN FRANCISCO — The Mission Promise Neighborhood (MPN) completed its 2025 Neighborhood Survey, providing a deep dive into the lives, successes, and challenges of families in San Francisco’s Mission District. Conducted in May 2025 with 425 respondents, this survey highlights the Mission’s enduring strength as a cultural hub and identifies critical areas where we can further support our community.
Our Community’s Successes
The data reveals several areas where our community is thriving and where MPN’s collective efforts are making a tangible difference:
- A Resilient Community Hub: The Mission is still the main place people go for what they need most. Use of childcare and preschool is growing, and demand for legal services remains steady. It also stays the go-to spot for cultural groceries, banking, and dining out, as well as shopping for clothes and shoes.
- Rising Community Spirit: Civic involvement is accelerating, with a recent survey showing a remarkable 45% of respondents engaged in local initiatives, such as PTAs and community clean-ups. This elevated activity is an encouraging 11-percentage point increase from 34% in 2023, signaling a revitalized sense of shared responsibility and the success of engagement efforts in cultivating a more participatory citizenry.
- Youth Success: Children in MPN schools show higher engagement in after-school and summer programming, a testament to our focus on the next generation.
- The Mission is experiencing a positive trend in financial inclusion and security. Financial stability is growing, with a 15% drop in the number of “unbanked” residents. Over the past two years, one in ten people who previously lacked access have successfully obtained a bank account or debit card. Crucially, our data indicates that families connected to MPN are significantly more likely to utilize formal financial tools compared to the rest of the neighborhood.
Opportunities for Growth and Action
While there is much to celebrate, the survey also points to clear priorities for our future work:
- Closing the Healthcare Gap:We’ve identified a disparity in routine healthcare access. Families in MPN schools report lower rates of annual check-ups compared to non-MPN families (88% vs. 92%). We must work closer with partners to ensure every child receives preventive care.
- Supporting Special Needs: There is a significant information gap regarding resources for children with special needs, with fewer than half of parents reporting awareness of available support.
- Reinvigorating College Prep: Parental attendance in post-secondary orientation programs has seen a sharp decline from 58% to 37%. Given that interest in these pathways remains high, this is a critical area for renewed focus and investment.
Looking Ahead
The 2025 survey serves as both a celebration of the Mission’s resilience and a strategic roadmap for MPN and our partners. As we move forward into 2026, these insights will guide our efforts to ensure every family in the Mission has the resources they need to thrive.
