Aunt and Niece Team Up as a Fashion Power Duo on Mission Street

SAN FRANCISCO —Mission District neighbors now have a new way to shine with style at parties and special occasions.

Yessenia’s Boutique is a fashion clothing and accessories store that opened its doors in 2024 at El Mercadito de Plaza Adelante, MEDA’s business incubator. The store is the creative vision of Yessenia Oyuela and her niece, Lisbeth Padilla—two fashion enthusiasts who have dreamed of owning their own business since childhood.

“I grew up watching my dad, mom, and grandmother make things to sell, and I would sell them,” says Yessenia. “In my hometown, there was a small store, and I always dreamed of having one like that neighbor’s. It’s something I’ve wanted since I was very young.”

Her experience was key to taking the leap and opening the boutique when the opportunity arose at El Mercadito. However, she decided to rely on her niece Lisbeth to incorporate the vision of a younger generation into the business.

“It’s the best decision I’ve made because she knows the latest trends. I understand that young people have a different style,” says Yessenia. “She is a constant support—we are always in communication and make decisions together.”

Yessenia’s Boutique specializes in women’s clothing but also offers styles for men. Its inventory includes shoes, handbags, perfumes, and makeup.

“In addition, as a stylist and cosmetologist, I provide more recommendations to customers, allowing us to offer a better service,” says Lisbeth.

MEDA’s Small Business Development team has supported the venture from the beginning, providing technical assistance and access to grants that have allowed the entrepreneurs to stock the store with new styles.

“Yessenia and Lisbeth complement each other with their unique talents,” says Edwin Rodriguez, Associate Director of the Business Development Program. “We also applaud their strong sense of civic engagement—whenever opportunities arise to advocate for the business community, they are always ready to contribute and bring small businesses together.”

Meanwhile, Yessenia encourages other community members to take the leap into entrepreneurship.

“People always talk about waiting for the right time to start a business, but the right time is now. You learn along the way,” says Yesenia. “MEDA’s classes give us the experience we lacked, and their support is constant—they always respond to our questions.”
