VITA TAX PREPARATION PROGRAM INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
SUMMARY:
Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) is a community-based, local economic development
organization which, for over 36 years, has engaged individuals and small business in community-building
strategies. Our mission is to achieve economic justice for San Francisco’s low and moderate income
Latino families through asset development. Within the past year, MEDA launched Plaza Adelante, a one-
stop financial and asset development center.
In 2011, MEDA will be kicking off its second year of offering free tax preparation services to low-income
families as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Last year, not only did MEDA
staff and volunteers prepare nearly 2,000 tax returns and bring a total of $2.44 million dollars in tax
refunds back into the community, but we also helped to connect our tax assistance clients to other
services such as affordable financial products, microenterprise development, public benefits and
financial aid for college students.
We are currently looking for an intern to work with us in the Spring 2011 Semester to help us to
continue expanding our VITA Tax Preparation program. As an intern you will get the opportunity to learn
how to do taxes and assets development services, while helping thousands of low-income families keep
millions of dollars in tax returns.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Help with implementation of VITA Tax prep program, either in the capacity of a greeter, benefits
screener or as an actual tax preparer*
• Help to plan and execute volunteer trainings and orientations
• Distribute flyers, make presentations and participate in social media campaign to recruit more
volunteers and get the word out to potential clients
• Assist with data entry and evaluation of the Tax Prep program
• Organize volunteer appreciation event at the end of the program
*Anyone participating as a tax preparer must receive additional training and certification from the
IRS
Qualifications:
• Must be extremely reliable and able to meet deadlines
• Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills and an attention to detail
• Must be flexible and willing to work in a fast-paced office environment
• Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are preferred
• Must be available to work 10-20 hours per week from January-May 2011
(volunteer opportunities are available starting in December 2010, for anyone interested)
This internship is unpaid but students will receive Certificates of Appreciation from MEDA and the
Internal Revenue Service at the end of the semester, plus the experience of working in a dynamic,
Mission District-based nonprofit organization and being a part of a program that will make a real
economic impact in 1,000s of low-income people’s lives.
