Technology Workshop Assistant Volunteer

Program Summary: 

Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) is a community-based, local economic development organization which has engaged individuals and small businesses in community-building strategies for over 40 years.  Our mission is to achieve economic justice for San Francisco’s low and moderate income Latino families through asset development.

MEDA’s Technology program assists parents, families, and individuals in San Francisco to learn how to use computers and the Internet, and integrate these tools into their daily lives.  MEDA has an aggressive target to ensure that every child who lives in or goes to school in the Mission has access to a highspeed Internet connection and a computer in the home. MEDA offers multi-week trainings both onsite at Plaza Adelante as well as in the four Mission Promise Neighborhood schools. We are recruiting for Teaching Assistants for our computer classes in order to help adults learn how to use computers.

Purpose:

Help a new computer user feel confident in developing skills! Assist our computer teachers with delivering Basic and Intermediate Digital Literacy classes, onsite at Plaza Adelante and at area schools. You will work with parents, helping inexperienced users to feel more comfortable using computers and the Internet.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help teach about computers, including email, Internet, online safety, and SchoolLoop.
  • Coach students one-on-one and help them to practice their skills.
  • Assist in interactive activities
  • Offer encouragement to new tech users 

Qualifications:

  • Must have an understanding of basic computing
  • Strong familiarity with email, Internet, MS Office
  • Must be extremely reliable and able to follow through on commitments.
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills with people from diverse cultures and life circumstances.
    • Ability to work with the public in a helpful and supportive manner.
      • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are required

Time Commitment:

  • Student workshops are held during the morning and evening, and on Saturdays
  • Individual coaching sessions are held during normal business hours
  • We ask for a 2-3 month commitment, and that you volunteer at least 2 hours per week.
