Volunteer Services Manager

SUMMARY
Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) is a community-based, local economic development organization which, for over 42 years, has engaged individuals and small business in community-building strategies that together lead to appropriate and equitable economic development in the Mission District. MEDA primarily serves low-income clients, focusing on the Latino and/or Spanish-speaking community. In accomplishing its mission, MEDA is involved in several distinct activities: small business assistance, housing counseling, workforce development, VITA taxes, financial education, community real estate and community lending. We also devote resources to research and evaluation, community organizing and advocacy. In the process, MEDA is helping to develop best practices in the field.

In December 2012, MEDA was awarded a 5-year, $30 million implementation grant from the Department of Education to implement the Mission Promise Neighborhood, a neighborhood based effort to improve education and create family economic stability for in the Mission District through a cradle- to college- to career continuum of services. This initiative involves 26 community based organization partners, as well as City of San Francisco government agencies, the San Francisco Unified School District, and the Mayor’s Office of San Francisco as close collaborators in the implementation effort. MEDA is the lead agency, fiscal agent and project manager for the Mission Promise Neighborhood.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Volunteer Services Manager will be responsible for recruiting, training and coordinating volunteers within the various MEDA programs and building the capacity of Mission District residents to take an active part in the activities and work of the community.

  • Coordinates volunteer program. Creates job descriptions, recruitment plan, volunteer database and tracking mechanisms, placement objectives, follow-up, performance management, etc.
  • Consults with Director of HR on legalities of managing volunteers and implement program that is compliant with all HR laws and policies.
  • Works with the Evaluation team to track volunteers and to report volunteer hours.
  • Conducts ongoing needs assessment of gaps in services. Uses data to inform recruitment and implementation strategies.
  • Creates and facilitates regularly scheduled training and community gathering opportunities with volunteers, providing on-going support.
  • Recruits volunteers for placement in programs and identify volunteers who would make good advocates for collaborative project.
  • Recruits at least 200 individuals to serve as VITA tax volunteers.
  • Conducts community presentations and creates a marketing program for volunteers. In consultation with the MPN Program Director, schedule volunteers to provide direct service to clients, and/or perform administrative duties as assigned.
  • Cultivates relationships with schools and CBOs to promote Mission Promise Neighborhood services
  • Establish an “internship” program by working with the community college, universities and high schools to ensure that students get credit.
  • Coordinating opportunities and events for corporate partners with Development Department

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university.
  • Experience in community organization or recruitment.
  • Demonstrated skill in coordinating projects and events.
  • Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping skills.
  • Friendly demeanor, motivating and inspiring to a diverse population of teens and adults.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Poise and confidence with public speaking.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other computer applications.
  • Experience with Salesforce or other CRM Databases and Constant Contact or other e-mail marketing tools preferred.
  • Spanish fluency preferred. Professional or personal or experience working with communities of color required.
  • Must be available to work outside regular business hours.
