Leonardo Luna, a father of two, was recognized with the ¡VIVA! Award at MEDA’s annual gala on Sept. 19 at the San Francisco Design Center. The award highlights his dedication to improving his family’s quality of life and his ongoing advocacy for affordable housing and community empowerment.
Leonardo’s connection with MEDA began in 2010 when he discovered their free tax preparation program while attending English classes at City College. That initial step introduced him to a range of MEDA programs, from financial literacy workshops to small business development courses and first-time homebuyer education.
Over the years, Leonardo faced significant housing challenges, including unfair and unstable conditions. Despite the difficulties, he worked persistently to find a stable home for his family. In 2021, his efforts paid off when he secured an affordable housing unit through the DAHLIA lottery at Casa Adelante – 2060 Folsom, with support from MEDA’s Housing Opportunities Team.
This experience inspired Leonardo to take a more active role in advocating for tenants’ rights and affordable housing in San Francisco. As a member of the Extremely Low Income (ELI) Coalition, he has shared his experiences with the San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ Land Use Committee, calling for practical solutions to the housing crisis.
In 2024, Leonardo was an active campaigner for Prop G, an initiative to create the Housing Opportunity Fund, which will begin supporting ELI individuals in 2026. The measure passed in the November General Election, marking a step forward for housing equity.
Leonardo’s story is one of perseverance and community involvement, underscoring the meaningful impact of MEDA’s programs and the importance of collective action for a better future.
