MEDA Receives PayPal Grant for MEDAPulse App
Funds to complete design and launch financial-services mobile app in 2018

San Francisco, Calif. — Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA), an organization committed to strengthening low- and moderate-income Latino families by promoting economic equity and social justice through asset building and community development, announced today that it has been awarded a $7,500 grant from the PayPal Gives Corporate Advised Fund at Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The grant was recommended by PayPal’s employee-volunteer led Bay Area GIVE Team, and it will be used to design and launch MEDAPulse — an innovative mobile app developed for client-to-coach interactions among MEDA Financial Capability program clients to ensure greater impact above and beyond traditional counseling.

“The grant provided by the PayPal Bay Area GIVE Team will be vital in ensuring our Financial Capability clients continue to receive the best aspects of MEDA’s one-on-one coaching through the use of technology, in this case MEDAPulse,” said MEDA Executive Director Luis Granados.

MEDA’s integrated services model connects low-income clients participating in direct-service programs to financial capability. This continues a full integration of the delivery of financial coaching across all asset-building programs, which ultimately helps clients thrive and become financially self-sufficient. MEDA serves as the lead agency and manages the San Francisco SparkPoint center financial-services integration model. Through this model, MEDA provides financial coaching, free tax preparation, benefits screening and connection to financial products. Additionally, there is access to two income-generating programs: Business Development and Workforce Development.

MEDAPulse was made possible through PayPal’s GIVE Team program, which globally empowers employees to support the communities in which they live and work through volunteerism and employee-sponsored grants. With more than 30 GIVE Teams worldwide, employees annually recommend approximately $800,000 in grants, which are then distributed to benefitting organizations through the PayPal Gives Corporate Advised Fund.

“PayPal Gives was established to further the positive social impact we seek to have as a company and to actively contribute to the betterment of our communities,” explained Senior Manager of Global Philanthropy & Employee Engagement Julie Vennewitz-Pierce of PayPal. “We’re proud to support a wide variety of programs around the world, each of which helps build stronger, more-inclusive communities that enable greater opportunity for individuals and families. MEDA is a great example of this effort, and we’re pleased to support their work.”
