Business Development Accounting Volunteer

Program Summary: 

Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) is a community-based, local economic development organization which has engaged individuals and small businesses in community-building strategies for over 40 years.  Our mission is to achieve economic justice for San Francisco’s low and moderate income Latino families through asset development.

Our Business Development program assists entrepreneurs in San Francisco to help start and expand their businesses.  Services provided through individual consultations and group workshop curriculum, in both English and Spanish, include access to capital, business assessment, business planning, financial projections and budgeting, marketing, lease consultation, and services tailored specifically to family childcare providers in San Francisco.

Purpose:

Share your accounting skills with new entrepreneurs who are in the beginning stages of opening their own business!  Lead group workshops on QuickBooks, teaching new business owners how to utilize this accounting software. You will also work one-on-one with clients and coach them in the QuickBooks POS system, providing technical assistance and support as they navigate and learn how best to utilize this software for their new business.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical training to small groups of new business owners
  • Work with clients individually and coach them on QuickBooks
  • Provide encouragement and offer suggestions to new business owners on accounting systems, best practices, and the financial health of their business.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all client information. 

Qualifications:

  • Must have an understanding of the basic principles of Accounting
  • Must have expert knowledge of QuickBooks and QuickBooks POS system
  • Ability to explain software to those without an accounting background and experience teaching or training is desirable.
  • Must be extremely reliable and able to follow through on commitments.
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills with people from diverse cultures and life circumstances.
    • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are preferred

Time Commitment:

  • Client workshops are held in the evening
  • Individual coaching sessions are held during normal business hours
  • We ask for a 6 month commitment, and that you volunteer at least 2 hours per week.
